Celtic ‘add former Benfica data analyst’ Antoine Ortega to their sports science team
CELTIC has added former Benfica analyst Antoine Ortega to its sports science department, according to reports.
Frenchman Ortega, who worked as a consultant for the Portuguese giants, has been hired to help recruit players and analyze the opposition.
The Daily Mail says he has obtained the work permit he needs to allow him to start working in Scotland.
With a master’s degree in data science from the University of Paris-Saclay, Ortega works as a football data scientist in a company called Smartcoach.
He also founded a company called Dunk the Data where he published statistical studies on football and the NBA.
And now – after a stint in consultation with Benfica – Celtic will ask him to delve into the data and numbers to help Ange Postecoglou win the Scottish Premiership title.
The Hoops have currently loaned Jota from Benfica – and are in talks to make the move permanent.
Meanwhile, Hoops transfer talks with Riley McGree collapsed at the eleventh hour, according to reports.

The Australian midfielder looked set to be announced as the Hoops’ fifth signing in January.
Reports elsewhere suggested the deal had been made, with Celtic paying around £ 3million to Charlotte FC for his services.
The 23-year-old received an Australian summons from Ange Postecoglou, with his personal touch that would have convinced McGree to opt for Glasgow.
But the Daily Mail says that a late game for Championship side Middlesbrough appears to have potentially derailed the deal with the Celts.
They say Boro offered a counter-offer worth another £ 2million more to MLS, with higher wages for the player as well – at £ 14,000 a week.
The former Birmingam moneylender impressed during his stint in St Andrews, with Nottingham Forest also interested in taking him to the North East.
Celtic have already signed the Japanese trio Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi this month.
