Chirantan Ghosh: A data scientist who saves the environment through AI.
When AI meets the environment, major problems can be solved and this has been proven by none other than Chirantan Ghosh, a computer scientist and researcher working with Lehigh University, USA, pursuing his Ph.D.
Chirantan earned first place in his department for his undergraduate degree in computer science and engineering. Later, he became interested in research while pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He then enrolled in a master’s program in computer science at the University of Delaware.
According news publication Media Hindustan During his second master’s degree at the University of Delaware, he worked for two years on a NOAA-funded research project. This involves predicting the occurrence and magnitude of surface runoff in order to warn farmers. Surface runoff occurs when nutrients are washed away from water bodies, mainly as a result of heavy rainfall. It is harmful to both the economy and the environment. The loss of nutrients from agricultural fields has a negative impact on crop production and profits. It also pollutes water, causing harmful algal blooms and hypoxia in the Great Lakes region. Therefore, the warning system is essential to reduce water pollution. This environmental conservation activity was held in high esteem and Chirantan decided to keep pushing forward for environmental and social causes. He enhanced the system with advanced algorithms and put it on autopilot mode.
Chirantan’s expertise led him to work for a year on another research project funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US government. He used deep learning-based multi-segmentation to segment small RNA cells in this project. This contributes to the automation of the process, which reduces the complexity of manual cell wall segmentation by minimizing errors and time.
His research skills evoked his entrepreneurial spirit, which prompted him to launch camai.us, a startup that is still in its infancy. Camai.us, like Google Lens, aims to solve any problem of detecting or identifying objects with greater accuracy and on any device equipped with a camera. What is camai.us capable of? It can recognize any object and provide detailed information to anyone who wants to know more about it. It can also recommend similar items. The category of object will determine the type of information it provides.
Venture to open another startup, Hap.a, which will detect and identify any threat using surveillance methods based on computer vision and deep learning, alerting the appropriate organization and the subject in question . This will help overcome the majority of challenges and safety issues that women face, while promoting a safe and healthy society. It will provide a safe environment for women on a college or university campus, as well as in the workplace. The surveillance camera will be used to recognize and track people, recognize their actions and detect a potential threat. It will monitor a person’s behavior and send an alert if anything unusual is discovered. It will track a person’s behavior and send an alert if anything unusual is discovered.
Having conducted a lot of research, it inspired him to develop further research on computer vision and deep learning as a PhD student. student at Lehigh University beginning in the fall of 2022. Chirantan will return to Lehigh to conduct research beneficial to society. One of his potential research projects will be to identify fake news among the abundance of online news available in the form of videos or images. This will help prevent or control the spread of false information on the Internet, as well as mitigate any harm caused by it. He will also work on facial analysis for humans and animals.
