Former DOH data analyst launches campaign website

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Former Florida Department of Health data analyst Rebekah Jones has launched a campaign website saying she is running for the seat of Florida’s first congressional district. Currently, US Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Occupies the seat.

As of Friday afternoon, the Florida Division Elections website does not list Jones as a candidate for the Florida District Congressional seat. Jones’ name was also missing from the Federal Election Commission’s list of candidates for the race on Friday afternoon.

The title of the YouTube video posted to Jones’ campaign website reads “announcement coming July 30, 2021.”

The video shows several appearances of Jones in national media in the summer of 2020 criticizing the Florida coronavirus data reports. In July 2020, Florida reported a single-day increase of 15,300 coronavirus cases, which was a record at the time. The state had reported more than 10,000 new cases on multiple occasions this month.

The video also included a clip Jones posted to Instagram on June 8, indicating that she would be running for Gaetz’s seat.

“One of the reasons I waited to make final decisions on my candidacy was because I was hoping the criminal justice system would remove Matt Gaetz from Congress on its own,” she says in her video. “It takes a long time and nothing is certain, especially since the rich and powerful play by their own rules. So if I have to go home to Florida to fight Matt Gaetz, then I will, ”she continued.

Jones’ website says she is presenting herself as a freelance.

Issues highlighted for its platform include the environment, government transparency and accountability, science, research and education.

“I have spent the last year fighting for government accountability and transparency, for ethics, for science-based policy,” Jones said in another Instagram video posted Thursday. “And I’m taking this fight to Capitol Hill.”
