gehraiyaan: From working as a data analyst at a Gurgaon company to acting, ‘Gehraiyaan’ star Dhairya Karwa reflects on his journey

MUMBAI: Landing a lead role in upcoming relationship drama “Gehraiyaan” after playing supporting roles in blockbusters like “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and “83” was gradual progress, says actor Dhairya Karwa.

The Jaipur-born actor was first noticed by industry insiders as well as the public for his turn as an army officer in “Uri” and Prime Video web series “Made In Heaven. “. His last cinematic release was Kabir Khan’s sports drama ’83’, in which he played the role of cricketer Ravi Shastri.

Karwa, who started her modeling career in Delhi and moved to Mumbai in 2016 to continue acting, said the trip is getting better every day.

“I avoid using the word ‘struggle’ because it has a negative connotation. I call it the aspirant stage where I put all the effort and try to grow in my career. It is a phase of growth and learning. Fortunately, things are getting better and better. I can’t complain, I’m happy,” the actor told PTI in an interview.

“I meet filmmakers and things are accelerating. Hopefully there should be some news soon (on other upcoming movies). But from modeling to acting, passing auditions and being cast in movies like ‘Uri…’, ’83’ wasn’t an overnight change but a gradual one,” he added. .

Karwa said the anticipation surrounding Shakun Batra’s “Gehraiyaan” and the attention he is getting for his performance in the upcoming film is something he greatly appreciates.

The actor thinks all the rejections he faced early in his career were nothing short of a blessing in disguise, as it made him patient enough to wait for the right characters.

“Looking back now, going through all the tough days now, I feel good because something better had to happen,” he added.

The 34-year-old actor previously worked as a data analyst at a company in Gurgaon and planned to pursue an MBA if the movies didn’t happen. Today, Karwa said he is happy that his hard work and efforts have paid off.

“Sometimes I feel like life has better plans and what is meant for you will come for you. You can’t sit at home, it takes effort. Opportunities come, but you have to also work to seize them. Fate will play its part but you can’t wait for an opportunity to hit you. You have to keep working hard,” he said.

Karwa, who is an untrained actor, said the auditions were a learning ground for him.

“I kept giving auditions every time I heard of a movie and that’s how ‘Uri’, ’83’ and ‘Gehraiyaan’ came along… I was lucky enough to being able to work with talented actors is another school for me, just watching them,” he said.

He landed the role in ‘Gehraiyaan’ after several rounds of auditions that lasted about a month, which made Karwa realize that this is a ‘big’ movie with big ‘stars’.

Billed as a drama about complex modern relationships, the film also stars Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday in the lead.

In the Karan Johar-backed film, the actor plays Karan, an urban man, whom Karwa described as someone who doesn’t want to be part of the “rat race and believes in living on his terms.”

The film also marks his second collaboration with Padukone, with whom he worked on ’83’. Also featuring Nasseruddin Shah and Rajat Kapur in key roles, “Gehraiyaan” is set to premiere February 11 on Prime Video.
