Research Data Scientist I – Refresh Miami

That’s why Eight Sleep is looking for a hands-on, research-focused Data Scientist I to help optimize data workflows for research studies and uncover insights from our vast datasets. You will work closely with software engineers, data scientists, algorithm developers and the clinical research coordinator at Eight Sleep, to manage the data collected from multiple sources during the studies and create a flow of optimal data that streamlines data collection and algorithm development efforts. Data will come from multiple sensors, ground truth devices and study surveys spanning a range of size and complexity. You will be responsible for ensuring data quality for all research studies, setting up data workflows that follow HIPAA guidelines and good clinical practices, and performing statistical analyzes for data collections. ongoing and completed studies that will be used to generate feedback on functionality and algorithm development, and used for white papers and peer-reviewed publications. This role will report to the Director of Science and Clinical Research at Eight Sleep, within the Research and Development team.

We are looking for people who tackle problems with a systematic approach and make data-driven decisions to deliver the best products to our users. This role has high growth potential to learn machine learning, writing white papers and peer-reviewed publications, and experimental design.

How you will contribute

  • Data management and data engineering:

    • Time-align and analyze data from multiple sources with varying sample rates.

    • Work cross-functionally to create and optimize databases and workflows so that data analyzes are possible by querying a specific study, participant, or data type.

  • Guarantee the good quality and confidentiality of data:

    • Create effective dashboards, scripts and/or methods to check the quality of incoming study data to identify issues with sensors and/or assays.

    • Build databases and workflows that ensure subject PII is protected for data privacy (compliant with HIPAA and IRB compliance).

    • Develop methods to monitor and track study progress, as well as subject demographics, and help create a subject database.

  • Data analysis and visualization:

    • Basic statistical analyzes of data, including descriptive statistics, validation statistics, hypothesis testing and regression

    • Data visualization for white papers, blog posts, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications

    • Exploratory analyses: you will analyze large data sets to extract new insights by leveraging expert knowledge within the company and scientific literature reviews; basic machine learning can apply

What you will need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Data Science (or related field)

  • 1+ years of work experience

  • Data analysis and visualization: Very good command of Python (Pandas, Scipy, Numpy, Scikit Learn, Jupyter Notebooks, PyCharm, seaborn/matplotlib/plotly/bokeh or other data visualization packages), Github, AWS s3 & sagemaker , SQL

  • Statistical techniques: descriptive statistics, validation statistics (ICC, bland-altman/LOA, MAE, correlation, etc.) and basic hypothesis testing statistics (parametric and non-parametric), linear regression

  • Ability to communicate highly technical results to a lay audience; strong time management skills and excellent attention to detail while moving at a fast pace

  • Flexibility: willingness to embark on new projects or assignments (e.g. helping to collect data)


  • Basic machine learning: regression, decision trees, etc.

  • Experience working with wearable and/or human physiological data, or knowledge of sleep and physiology

  • Basic understanding of HIPAA, GCP and IRB compliance for data privacy

  • Human research experience
