The ex-chief data scientist of Point72 is recruiting for his start-up

It’s not just the technologists and strategists who come out of investment banks and hedge funds and do their own things. Data scientists do it too: take Graham Giller, former head of data science research at JPMorgan and former head of primary research at Deutsche, or Jeffrey Ryan, former quantitative researcher and data expert at Citadel, who works now for a daily rate.

The latest data scientist to go it alone is Michael Recce, former chief data scientist at hedge fund Point72. Since leaving Point72 six years ago, Recce has been a data scientist at GIC in Singapore and chief data scientist at Neuberger Berman in New York. Today, he is recruiting data scientists for his own company, Alpha Roc LLC.

Alpha Roc “will provide products and services to reduce friction between sellers and buyers of data,” Recce said, adding that he intended to hire “a few key people” first to develop the business. Specifically (but also in a slightly cryptic way), he says that Alpha Roc’s products will “be KPIs that will be used by fundamental analysts to determine the value of an investment,” and that they will be “derived from. automated analysis of alternative data. nourishes. “

The key people that Recce intends to hire are data scientists and software engineers with a solid background in statistics and who are familiar with AWS. At the moment, he seems to be the only employee.
